The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - "The Strange Case of the Iron Box" (Old Time Radio, 1945)
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes | Old Time RadioShow Notes
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes presents “The Strange Case of the Iron Box,” originally broadcast December 31, 1945. This is episode 199 of the series, starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson.
On New Year’s Eve 1899, Holmes and Watson travel to Dunbar Castle near Edinburgh, where a long-sealed iron box is due to be opened under the terms of a family trust. With an inheritance, an unusual calendar question, and several interested parties gathered in the castle library, the evening becomes a case of strained expectations and suspicious motives. Written by Denis Green and Anthony Boucher, the Mutual Broadcasting System drama was sponsored by Petri Wine Company and was suggested by an incident in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “Silver Blaze.”
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes presents the original broadcast with a newly produced contextual introduction, a short closing announcement, and gently cleaned/mastered audio for a more consistent listening experience.
