The Secret to Real Relaxation: Your Exhale is the Answer

Hello, and welcome. I'm Julia Cartwright, and I'm so glad you're here. Whether you're listening on a Sunday morning, stealing five minutes at your desk, or maybe you're one of those beautiful souls up before dawn on a Monday, I see you. I know this time of year can feel like you're juggling invisible balls while someone keeps adding more to the mix. So today, we're going to do something really simple together: we're going to practice the art of true relaxation. Not the kind where you're just sitting there thinking about your to-do list. The real kind.
Let's start by getting comfortable. Wherever you are right now, see if you can find a position where your body feels genuinely supported. That might be sitting, lying down, or leaning against something. There's no perfect posture here, just honest comfort. As you settle in, notice the temperature of the air around you. Is it cool or warm? Not good or bad, just what is.
Now, let's ground ourselves with the breath. Breathe in through your nose for a count of four. Feel the coolness of that inhale. Hold it for a moment, then exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of six. Longer out than in. That's actually the secret sauce of relaxation right there. Our nervous system loves that exhale. Let's do that three more times together. In for four, hold, and out for six. One more time. Beautiful.
Now, here's the main practice I want to share with you today. It's called the Body Scan Release, and it's like giving yourself permission in sections. Start at the crown of your head and slowly, gently, bring awareness downward. Notice your forehead, your jaw, your neck and shoulders. Many of us hold tension like we're being paid for it, so as you notice these areas, imagine them softening like butter in warm sun. There's no forcing here, just observing and allowing.
Move down through your chest, your belly, your back. Feel how your breath naturally fills these spaces. Bring your attention to your arms, your hands. Let them be heavy if they want to be. Down through your hips, your thighs, your calves, all the way to your feet touching the earth or your floor. By the time you reach your toes, you've given your entire being permission to release just a little bit more.
When you're ready, take one more full breath. As you open your eyes, notice how you feel. This feeling, this ease you've created, it doesn't have to stay here on the mat. Carry it with you. When stress creeps in today, remember you can always return to that longer exhale.
Thank you so much for practicing Relaxation with me today. If this resonated with you, please subscribe so we can do this again soon. You deserve this peace.
