The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - "The Singular Affair of the Baconian Cipher" (Old Time Radio, 1946)
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes | Old Time RadioShow Notes
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes presents “The Singular Affair of the Baconian Cipher,” originally broadcast May 27, 1946. Episode 220 of the series stars Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson.
When a visiting French detective doubts the ingenuity of English criminals, Holmes finds a suspiciously misprinted notice in the Agony Column of The Times. Its hidden Baconian cipher leads Holmes, Watson, and their guest toward The Elms in Penge and a troubling case of murder and intrigue. Written by Anthony Boucher and Denis Green, this Mutual Broadcasting System drama was suggested by an incident in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Sign of Four. It was Rathbone’s final radio appearance as Sherlock Holmes.
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes presents the original broadcast with a newly produced contextual introduction, a short closing announcement, and gently cleaned/mastered audio for a more consistent listening experience.
