BDC Podcast E3 with Craig Bulloch

Better Dads Club Podcast

Show Notes

Craig Bullock is a New Zealand entrepreneur, podcast host, and founder of Mates Matters, a charity organisation focused on helping men have the conversations that matter.

Craig was nearly one of the 60 men we lose to suicide every hour around the world. He knows what it’s like to sit in the darkness and believe there’s no way out. His story isn’t about having it all figured out, it’s about surviving, speaking up, and choosing to keep going when it felt impossible.

Through his work, Craig is on a mission to break down the “she’ll be right” mindset and create spaces where men can open up — about mental health, physical health, and what’s really going on beneath the surface.

He’s also a Mental Health First Aid trainer, working with organisations across New Zealand to build awareness, confidence, and better support systems for their people.

In this conversation, Craig shares his personal journey — from the closure of his business following the Global Financial Crisis, taming the "big black dog" of depression, and the path back to purpose.

We also dive into his upbringing, his journey into fatherhood, and how those experiences have shaped the way he shows up as a dad today.

This is an honest, grounded conversation about resilience, responsibility, and what it really takes for men to step up — for themselves, their families, and their mates. ***Stop Putting Your Health on Hold. Take the first step with the Dad Bod Reset, our six-week small-group coaching programme designed for busy dads.*** What does it take to stay strong, healthy and active for your kids, not just today, but in 10, 20 or even 30 years? In this episode, Tom sits down with Dave Liow, exercise physiologist, founder of Holistic Movement Coach and father of two, to explore the importance of investing in your health for the long game of fatherhood. Both Tom and Dave became fathers later in life, and having spent decades working in health and wellness, they share a passion for helping dads stay healthy, capable and present as their children grow. In this conversation, they explore: The challenges of moving countries, rebuilding a business and raising a young family. Why strength, mobility and healthy habits become increasingly important as we age. How parents can support sporty teenagers without pushing them towards burnout or overtraining. Practical ways busy dads can prioritise their health without sacrificing family time. Why finding a deeper purpose is the key to lasting lifestyle changes. And perhaps most importantly, it's never too late to start. Whether you're in your 30s, 40s, 50s or 60s, even if you've never exercised before, positive changes are possible. Because looking after your health isn't just about living longer. It's about being able to participate in your children's lives, and one day, your grandchildren's too. Be Better for Your Kids.
