In this episode, we sit down with Ish Cheyne for a real conversation about fatherhood — and what it means to raise daughters in today’s world.
From navigating the emotional landscape of teenage years to making fast, grounded decisions in high-pressure situations, Ish shares what he’s learned about staying steady when it matters most. We talk about trust, consistency, and presence — and how those foundations shape the relationship you build with your kids over time.
A big part of this conversation is around role modelling. Ish opens up about the responsibility of showing his daughters what a healthy, loving relationship looks like — through the way he shows up with their mum, how he communicates, and how he continues to prioritise connection and romance in his marriage. Because whether we realise it or not, we’re setting the standard.
Ish’s journey into leadership wasn’t exactly planned. In 1993, he walked into the wrong job interview and went from chef to personal trainer in one confused afternoon. That “happy accident” set him on a path that’s led to him becoming Head of Fitness at Les Mills New Zealand and one of the country’s most sought-after leadership speakers and learning and development coaches.
With over 30 years of experience building high-performing teams, Ish brings a grounded, real-world approach to leadership. Whether he’s co-hosting the Not So Breakfast Show podcast or teaching executives how to present without notes through his “30 Minute Presenter” programme, his message is consistent:
Authenticity beats perfection. And real leadership comes from the heart — not the handbook.
This is an honest, practical conversation about leadership in the home, raising strong young women, and doing your best to get it right — even when you’re figuring it out as you go.
