The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes | Old Time RadioShow Notes
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes presents “The Notorious Canary Trainer,” episode 176, originally broadcast on April 23, 1945. Basil Rathbone stars as Sherlock Holmes, with Nigel Bruce as Dr. John Watson, in this Mutual Broadcasting System Petri Wine-era production.
While holidaying in Kingsgate, Kent, Holmes and Watson are approached by a frightened young woman who believes she is being followed. At the Fisherman’s Arms, a fellow lodger’s cage of canaries—and his questionable identity—draw Holmes into an unsettling mystery. Written by Anthony Boucher and Denis Green, the original radio play expands on a reference from Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Adventure of Black Peter.”
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes presents the original broadcast with a newly produced contextual introduction, a short closing announcement, and gently cleaned/mastered audio for a more consistent listening experience.
